The New Media: Amateurs Not Professionals
Submitted by Robert Lindquist on Tue, 08/11/2009 - 5:23am
On the surface, this may seem like an appropriate place to insert the old Monty Python line, "Now for something totally different," however I have posted this 16 minute video presentation by Clay Shirky because it is about the massive power of many-to-many communications and the force it's becoming in shaping our global society—on the threat that poses to those who would like to control information. Grab your favorite bevy, open your mind, and listen as Clay explains....
how Twitter, Facebook, SMS and other social media are demolishing the top-down control of news and information. His examples are political, but they ring true for music journalism and this video is a must see for anyone interested in social media. Quick takeaway: the majority of information sources are now driven by amateurs not professionals. Think about what that means...
Too Hot For Hookers?
Submitted by Robert Lindquist on Thu, 05/07/2009 - 8:54am
In the debate over global warming, we hear all sorts of scenarios foretelling of coming floods, a new dust bowl, wildfires, higher sea levels, more mosquitos, less wine, acid oceans and a shortage of Bulgarian hookers. Yet those of us who live in the more frigid areas of the country still ask, "If there's global warming—how come our winters keep getting longer and colder?" Well, because there are two sides to the argument. While one side says, "Humans are creating far too much gas and immediate action must be taken, lest we all die." The other side responds with, "You're crazy, global warming is a myth. Pass those beans."
So, how do you know who to believe in the climate change debate? Well, let's look at the data and where it comes from. Those who passionately believe that things are most definitely heating up love to quote numbers supplied by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Now, keep in mind that NOAA is a government agency, and without faulting any individual who works there, keep in mind that the government has a really bad record when it comes to running anything. It is also subject to the whims of the current administration as the head of NOAA is a Presidential appointee.
So do you get the picture? NOAA is all about politics, and politics is becoming more and more about global warming. But here's where it gets even more interesting.
Enter Anthony Watts, a 25-year broadcast meteorologist and currently chief meteorologist for KPAY-AM radio in Northern California. In 1987, Watts founded ItWorks, which supplies broadcasters with all sorts of cool gear to aid in the forecasting and presentation of the weather. In 2007, he founded SurfaceStations.org, a Web site devoted to photographing and documenting the quality of weather stations across the U.S. His personal blog site is Watts Up With That?
The purpose of the SurfaceStations project is to evaluate the accuracy of NOAA's 1221 climate stations placed throughout the US. Thus far, as of 1/25/09, the project's findings show that 89 percent of the stations fail to meet the National Weather Service’s own performance criteria. In other words, almost 9 out of every 10 stations are likely reporting higher or rising temperatures because they are badly sited.
According to Watt's report, "We found stations located next to the exhaust fans of air conditioning units, surrounded by asphalt parking lots and roads, on blistering-hot rooftops, and near sidewalks and buildings that absorb and radiate heat. We found 68 stations located at wastewater treatment plants, where the process of waste digestion causes temperatures to be higher than in surrounding areas. We observed that changes in the technology of temperature stations over time also has caused them to report a false warming trend. We found major gaps in the data record that were filled in with data from nearby sites, a practice that propagates and compounds errors. We found that adjustments to the data by both NOAA and another government agency, NASA, cause recent temperatures to look even higher.
His conclusion: US Temperature data is unreliable. So the next time someone starts mouthing off about global warming, simply ask, "Have you read the Watts report that shows thatthe government's climate data is based on data and poorly sited equipment? And are you aware that the current head of NOAA is a like minded liberal appointed by President Obama?" Aren't you glad you stopped by? - ral.
Ooops.. It Happened Again!

But this time, it was not Britney who stomped off stage, it was Morrissey. The singer abruptly left the stage during his set at the Coachella festival in California last Friday after screaming to the crowd that he could "smell burning flesh". Well, yeah. It's a festival and there were probably some hots and burgers grilling nearby. Now, If a singer finds the smell of meat cooking offensive, then he should have known better than to take a gig at an outdoor festival in the first place. And what if it had really been Bobby Flay just grilling up some slices of fresh Zuchini? Would that have been equally offensive?
Now, I fully respect his right to eat whatever he wants whenever he wants, but when I've bought and paid for a ticket (I wasn't there, I speak only as an advocate on behalf of the fans who were thoroughly pissed by the performer's actions) I expect a performance or at least an apology and some form of compensation (maybe a free burger?). To make matters worse, some festival goers claimed that he followed his "Smell burning flesh" remark with, "And I hope to God it's human." Now that IS offensive, vegetarian or not.
One contributor to the Coachella message board said the 49 year old singer was "totally choked up and gagged on his way through 'Some Girls' and left the stage only to come back and gag some more". A contributor from the fan site Morrissey-Solo said: "I know a lot of people think he's being precious about the smell of burning flesh, but I wholeheartedly agree with Morrissey; it's hard to be joyous and uplifting when you're confronted with something that you find so offensive." Well then, to quote the late Harry Chapin, "Full time consideration of another endeavour, might be in order." (Morrissey was formerly with The Smiths, who released an album called Meat Is Murder in 1985).
Earlier in the month, Britney Spears lit up the ire of her fans when she left the stage for more than 30 minutes at a concert in Vancouver when she deemed the atmosphere too "smoky." During the unplanned intermission, ushers went through the crowd telling people it was a non-smoking facility and they had better cut it out, while that cool music they play during hockey games blared through the P.A. (According to People Magazine: When she did return, Spears, 27, delivered a well-received Bollywood take on "Me Against the Music," followed by "Everytime" – during which she asked the crowd "What's up, Vancouver?" before she again left the stage, some 90 seconds before the end of the song. The concert concluded with Spears singing "Womanizer" and advising the still-restless crowd, "Vancouver, don't smoke weed." Her sign-off was also peppered with a couple of X-rated expletives and a warning to "drive safe.")
Personally, I think both artists have lost sight of the fact that they work for the fans, just as any of us do, and you don't just walk out on your fans just because a few happen to enjoy a burger, fries and a smoke.
A Step Closer To One World Dollah
Submitted by Robert Lindquist on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 5:54am The Telegraph reports that, "The world is a step closer to a global currency, backed by a global central bank, running monetary policy for all humanity. A single clause in Point 19 of the communiqué issued by the G20 leaders amounts to revolution in the global financial order."
"We have agreed to support a general SDR allocation which will inject $250bn (£170bn) into the world economy and increase global liquidity," it said. SDRs are Special Drawing Rights, a synthetic paper currency issued by the International Monetary Fund that has lain dormant for half a century. In effect, the G20 leaders have activated the IMF's power to create money and begin global "quantitative easing". In doing so, they are putting a de facto world currency into play. It is outside the control of any sovereign body. Conspiracy theorists will love it. It has been a good summit for the IMF. Its fighting fund for crises is to be tripled overnight to $750bn. This is real money. MORE

Controversial "Obama Bows To King" Video Disappearing
Submitted by Robert Lindquist on Thu, 04/09/2009 - 5:44amEver since a video of the POTUS bowing before Saudi King Abdullah made it's way to multiple YouTube locations, it's been a popular topic for discussion on talk radio shows and on blogs, comment boards and twitter. Last night, in an informal, unscientific review, the vast majority of the comments ran from mild disdain to total disgust at the site of an American President caught in such a subservient act.
Callers to talk shows have also had little good to say, and even those who still defend Obama's constant unpresidential behaviors were having a rough time coming up with a strong defense (see comments below). Now, less than 12 hours later, the video has vanished from several YouTube sites (ironically, ones that had had the most views). I've embedded a link here where you can (hopefully) still see it, if not, try searching YouTube for "Obama bows to Saudi King.", but don't be surprised if you get "We're sorry, this video is no longer available."
Here's a sampling of comments from various sites where the video is (was) being offered:
"The "Obama apology tour" ends in a sickening display !!! Why in the world is our elected leader BOWING to an unelected monarch? What a disgusting display!!! I'm so embarassed of our president."
"That was NO bow. The Saudi Prince dropped a nickel and Obama thought it was a quarter. He had to look down to see."
"What a ******** disgrace. A United States President bowing to a muslim dictator. I thought I'd seen it all. And the sad, pathetic irony of it all is that of a black man bowing to a sexist, brutal, tyrant who's country and men officialy have brutalized and marginalized women for centuries. So pathetic. Wheres Gloria Steinham and the women's groups? Hypocrites. Where's the bought and sold for press? TAKE AMERICA BACK!!!!"
"Big falking deal! I recall that Bush had his tongue stuck down his throat and was acting like he was the Saudi King's prison bitch. Would you losers prefer that he acted like Bush did? Begging for more oil while holding hands and french kissing?"
"Obama camp (the Junior Cubs) now claims it was simply Obama using TWO hands in a handshake with a shorter man, um, er, shorter I'll give you (although not 4 ft 2 in like QE), but then who's hand is that in front in Obama's crotch? My bad, probably just Chris Matthews."
"At least when he's in that position he's not giving another speech...at least until he trains his ass to read the teleprompter"
"The white house is saying that wasn't a bow, so they're quite embarrassed. Obama is a B actor in a lead role as president and has no experience or ability to fill the shoes, he's winging it. Then to tell the American people that he didn't bow is an insult to our intelligence. Did he reach down to zip the guys fly or what, it sure looked like a bow to me."
"What's wrong with bowing with the king anyway?! Is just show some bit of respect to a head of state."
"Gesture of respect? Learn some history deadpool ... we threw out a monarchy over 230 years ago. I think you need to learn some American history, maybe get an education before you cast your ignorance out to the world. Oh and let's just remember that most of the 9/11 hijackers were SAUDIS! No bowing to Kings, especially of Saudi Arabia, the incubator of Bin Laden and his (many Saudi) followers."
"He wasn't bowing, he had a sudden attack of gas and bent over in pain before releasing that gastric bubble, he clearly wasnt bowing"
"He was not bowing, he was looking to make sure his shoes were tied before shaking the mans hand and some have suggested he was passing a gas bubble or something, but he's clearly not bowing so I agree with the White House statement."
"I am disappointed, as a Saudi, from some Americans' comments. Obama, your president that we respect a lot, is the one who bow. Why you guys saying bad thing about us and our King. There are a lot of disgusting comments about us such as desert slave, women haters, and many other comments. Is this the way that you treat others? Is this is Americans values? if so, I can understand that Obama is one of the most polite American in the whole America."
"What a weak president we have in Obama. He bows down to the Saudi King and has no response for North Koreas ballistic missile test after he warned them not to launch it. Iran and Russia must be licking their chops right about now."
"I wish all the idiots that voted for him would watch this. The man is truely an embarrassment! This handbasket is on the move. First stop? Hell!"
"Are people seriously discussing this?! — No offense, but get a life."
"Shut your pie hole."

A Landslide Win For Late Mayor
Submitted by Robert Lindquist on Wed, 04/08/2009 - 6:27am"I figured he'd win because he seemed to get even more popular after he died," said Lincoln County Clerk Elaine Luck. Harry Stonebraker, has been granted a fourth term by the voters the small Missouri town of Winfield, however winning the election is one thing, being around to serve is another.
It seems that the great equalizer snatched Harry away on March 11, at the age of 69 (Heart attack). Still, it didn't effect his approval ratings as he trounced Alderman Bernie Panther in Tuesday's general election grabbing 90 percent of the 239 votes cast. Luck said she wasn't surprised by Stonebraker's win, noting how Harry had led the community through the devastating "Flood of 200" caused by a muskrat who borrowed through a levee causing it fail and damaging about 100 homes. The town's aldermen will now appoint a mayor to serve until a special election can be held next in April to pick a mayor to serve out two-year term. Winfield has about of 1,500 residents and is about 50 miles northwest of St. Louis.
This is not the first time a MO politician has managed to pull off a win from the great beyond. In the 2000 U.S. Senate race, Democrat Mel Carnahan defeated incumbent Republican John Ashcroft even though Carnahan had perished in a plane crash just weeks before the November election. Carnahan's wife, was appointed to fill her late hubby's Senate seat but lost to Republican Jim Talent in special election in 2002.
